“Design that delights” Roberta Thatcher, Sunday Times.

From a plot in Benoni on the East Rand of Joburg, our process of design centers around a coming together of realness and mystery, designing and producing furniture products for local and international markets.

“I remember making a wooden pencil box when I was about ten years old in my fathers workshop on a small holding in Benoni. The box was pretty simple to make and I remember spending hours finishing it. What I recall most about that box was holding it up and feeling its proportions, not with my hands, but with eyes. Somehow it had to ‘agree’ with me. Years later this somewhat sincere process led me define a career in design after other stints in plumbing, building and air-conditioning. I started studying Industrial Design my mid 20’s and over the last few years began establishing a career in design.” Neil spent time as part of his Industrial Design studies interning at Doktor & Misses in JHB and …XYZ in Cape Town.

In March 2014, Neil started designing and making furniture as a result of not being able to find work in the product design industry. Working from his father's cramped workshop, he began exploring and establishing a distinct narrative and design language over the following months. In 2015 the studio received it's first notable shot at broadening its modest footprint when it became a part of the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives program in Cape Town. From there on, the studio started steadily laying a foundation from which to grow. They have since been featured in various media forms, nominated and gained various design awards, became part of Southern Guild’s ‘A New Wave’ exhibit and have been focused on design and production in order to meet the needs of their growing local and international client base. “We have been so privileged to work on some really exciting bespoke design installations as well progressively defining and forming our own furniture ranges” says Neil.

The studio currently works with a range of residential, commercial and educational institutions. The design style can be described as dynamic, bold, often quirky. Their manufacturing process has improved and developed year on year with large emphasis on building reliable and quality products with a charismatic charm. Neil’s goal is to continue to develop unique, useable furniture pieces, express himself authentically and build a brand that is far reaching for all those interact with it.

“NGS has a unique, conceptual and playful design style…” Khosi Leteba, Bupa Studios.

One of the studio’s primary goals is to create a great life for all those who share their time at NGS. Adding holistic value to the lives of their co-workers is something they continue to strive for and are constantly re-evaluating.

Neil loves furniture and the built environment. He wants his work to matter and to form part of numerous compelling & significant design / manufacture / architecture bodies of work. He also believes that in order to sustainably grow we need to collaborate and share ideas & skills.
